Telemark Bunad

The picture shows two different Telemark ‘bunads’. The one on the left is called the Beltestakk and the one of the right is from East Telemark.
May 17th is Norway’s Constitution Day and is celebrated throughout the country with schools taking part in parades and many people wearing a ‘bunad’ – a traditional rural costume. There are many different designs of bunad reflecting different regions. And within each regions there are a few different designs. The designs are typically elaborate, with embroidery, scarves, shawls and hand-made silver or gold jewellery.
Many Norwegians now wear their bunads for occasions like christenings, weddings, confirmations and other special occasions. Whilst it means that women don’t need to go and buy a new outfit for these special occasions, the original outlay to buy a quality ‘bunad’ can be anywhere from $2000 – 10,000!
